Characterization of the Subdifferentials of Convex Functions

چکیده
Each lower semi-continuous proper convex function f on a Banach space E defines a certain multivalued mapping of from E to E* called the subdifferential of f. It is shown here that the mappings arising this way are precisely the ones whose graphs are maximal "cyclically monotone" relations on Ex E*, and that each of these is also a maximal monotone relation. Furthermore, it is proved that of determines f uniquely up to an additive constant. These facts generally fail to hold when E is not a Banach space. The proofs depend on establishing a new result which relates the directional derivatives of f to the existence of approximate subgradients.

Partial second-order subdifferentials of -prox-regular functions
Although prox-regular functions in general are nonconvex, they possess properties that one would expect to find in convex or lowerC2 functions. The class of prox-regular functions covers all convex functions, lower C2 functions and strongly amenable functions. At first, these functions have been identified in finite dimension using proximal subdifferential. Then, the definition of prox-regula...
متن کاملCharacterization of Lipschitz Continuous Difference of Convex Functions
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a difference of convex (DC, for short) functions, defined on a normed space, to be Lipschitz continuous. Our criterion relies on the intersection of the ε-subdifferentials of the involved functions.
متن کاملOn Fejér Type Inequalities for (η1,η2)-Convex Functions
In this paper we find a characterization type result for (η1,η2)-convex functions. The Fejér integral inequality related to (η1,η2)-convex functions is obtained as a generalization of Fejér inequality related to the preinvex and η-convex functions. Also some Fejér trapezoid and midpoint type inequalities are given in the case that the absolute value of the derivative of considered function is (...
متن کاملThe distance between subdifferentials in the terms of functions
For convex continuous functions f, g defined respectively in neighborhoods of points x, y in a normed linear space, a formula for the distance between ∂f(x) and ∂g(y) in terms of f, g (i.e. without using the dual) is proved. Some corollaries, like a new characterization of the subdifferential of a continuous convex function at a point, are given. This, together with a theorem from [4], implies ...
متن کامل^-representation of Subdifferentials of Directionally Lipschitz Functions
Subdifferentials of convex functions and some regular functions f are expressed in terms of limiting gradients at points in a given dense subset of dorn Vf.
متن کاملCharacterization of Metric Regularity of Subdifferentials
We study regularity properties of the subdifferential of proper lower semicontinuous convex functions in Hilbert spaces. More precisely, we investigate the metric regularity and subregularity, the strong regularity and subregularity of such a subdifferential. We characterize each of these properties in terms of a growth condition involving the function.
